The Dreamcast Development Kit (Katana) from Sting Entertainment and FromSoftware, Inc.

This page invites you to explore Sting Entertainment’s development files, containing data related to the Dreamcast version of Evolution: The World of Sacred Device, as well as FromSoftware, Inc.’s files for Frame Gride on Dreamcast. It is an appendix to [Dreamcast Development Kits (Katana) to Download], which lists the available Dreamcast (Katana) development kits on the site.

About Sting Entertainment:

Sting Entertainment is a Japanese studio founded in 1989 in Tokyo, specializing in role-playing games and original titles. It is known for series such as Evolution: The World of Sacred Device, Riviera: The Promised Land, and Baroque. Over the years, the studio has collaborated with publishers like Atlus and formed several other partnerships to develop new projects. Although relatively small, Sting has established itself in the Japanese RPG scene thanks to its original concepts and innovative gameplay style.

Regarding Evolution: The World of Sacred Device for Dreamcast: there is nothing noteworthy concerning the files related to this game. It is a final version.

About FromSoftware, Inc.:

Founded in 1986 in Tokyo, FromSoftware initially developed software and arcade games before gaining recognition with the King’s Field series in the 1990s. The company achieved international fame with Demon’s Souls in 2009. This successful title gave rise to the renowned Souls series, followed by iconic productions such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. FromSoftware is today known for its immersive worlds, challenging gameplay, and implicit storytelling, remaining true to its philosophy of rewarding perseverance and exploration.

Regarding Frame Gride for Dreamcast: a semi-functional prototype of the game by FromSoftware exists. This beta, although problematic, is available for direct download in GD-I format below. It dates from approximately 10 days before the final version. The game crashes after navigating through the initial menus before starting a party. The most notable difference between this prototype and the final version is that the data is not encrypted, making it easy to extract information from the .MGF archives. The same applies to the .TXT files, which provide additional details about game values. There are also remnants of level construction, such as .MAP files.

The Dreamcast development kit (Katana):

The fact that the same Dreamcast development kit belonged to two different development studios is surprising. Notably, SEGA published Evolution 1 in Japan. Once its development was completed, did the manufacturer retrieve the Katana Dev Kit from Sting and then send it to FromSoftware?
