1)
ext. upper feng shui
Glas, Rain and Deke stand around the mirror in its transformed state, pondering it, trying to figure out what to do.
A vortex swirls within.
Deke stands sullenly apart from the group, and especially from the mirror. He wants nothing to do with it or hell.
Glas
Okay. What now?
Deke
Meself, I say we get the hell outta here.
Rain turns to face Deke sharply.
Rain
I’m not leaving without Hana!
Deke can’t hold her gaze, and winds up looking at the floor.
Deke
(quietly)
I ain’t goin’ inna that place again.
Glas
(gesturing around the space)
Look around you Deke! Where else are you gonna go? Walkabout? In a big circle?
Deke turns to face Glas directly, his humiliation at his fear turning to rage.
Deke
You got no idea what you’re walkin’ into mate.
Glas steps up into his face.
3)
Black reaper
The paths of the dead…
White reaper
…are not to be traversed by the living.
Black reaper
For death -
Glas glances at Rain, then steps up.
Glas
(interrupting)
One too many days in the fortune cookie factory, huh?
(to the reapers)
Hey, Ebony. Ivory. In plain English…
He starts gesturing as if signing to the deaf.
Glas
WHAT… DO… WE… HAVE… TO… DO… TO… GO… THROUGH?
The Black and White reapers now turn to face him.
black and white reaper
Die…
Glas glances back at Rain. This wasn’t really part of their plan.
Deke’s hands move toward his pistols. A reflex.
Their bodies begin to go transparent as they begin to fade away.
Rain approaches them.
Rain
Wait!
They’re gone, like smoke in a sudden breeze.
Deke’s hands uncurl from his pistol handles.
Glas steps back to Rain.
5)
Deke
Aright, goodonya then.
Rain throws a cool glance Deke’s way.
Rain
(to Wee Ming)
I’m not leaving Hana in hell.
Wee Ming
This extends far beyond you or me. My father has taken Hana for reasons I am only beginning to understand.
Rain
(firmly)
I don’t care. I’ll do whatever I have to do to get Hana back.
Deke
You better care girly. King of Hell ain’t a bloke ya wanna be messin’ with.
Rain wheels on Deke sharply.
Rain
FINE! You can stay then.
Rain turns to Glas.
Glas contemplates his shoes for a beat, then looks up at her.
Glas
Look Rain, I hate to agree with tubby here,
(gesturing towards Deke)
but I think he’s got a point.
Rain stops. She hadn’t expected him to back out too.
Rain looks around at the crowd arrayed around her, a clutch of worried, sullen faces, then at Wee Ming.
7)
Wee Ming
If this is what you truly wish.
(beat…)
Beyond this device lies the City of the Dead, the land of Yim Lau Wong. Hana is there. I will guide you. We must stay together and find her quickly.
Wee Ming gestures and three Talismans appear in her hand.
Wee Ming
Take these talismans. Never part with them.
She hands them out. One to each.
Wee Ming
Without them, your souls may not return to your mortal bodies.
Deke considers his talisman dubiously.
Deke
Lemme get this straight. Yer sayin’ me life is ridin’ on this dime store trinket?
Wee Ming
Yes.
(considers)
But one of you must stay. You must not leave your bodies undefended.
Deke
I’ll take that job.
Glas
Good idea, Deke. You did great the last time we counted on you.
A cold rage rises in Deke’s face.
Wee Ming chimes in…
9)
Her body slumps, lifeless. Glas rushes over to catch her falling body and takes it in his arms, letting her gently to the floor.
Glas stands again, and makes eye contact with Wee Ming.
Deke looks at Rain’s lifeless body, then at Wee Ming, then at Glas.
Deke
(to himself)
This is gonna hurt. I just know it.
He takes the talisman in his teeth, then roughly snaps it in half.
The red energy courses over his body, and he twitches as though electrocuted, then falls lifeless to the floor.
Wee Ming looks at Glas.
Wee Ming
Their fate now lies in your hands.
She steps toward the mirror’s surface, joining her own reflection. As she does, ghostly streaks of the red energy that consumed Rain and Deke begin to shoot from the bodies toward them, in thin streams, then more strongly, until the whole thing flares into a brilliant red flash just as she crosses through its surface. She is gone, and so are they.
Glas looks at the mirror for a moment, back to its earlier state.
He makes his way over to Deke’s body and straightens it out, taking his talisman half from where it had landed on the floor, and placing it on Deke’s chest.
He then makes his way over to Rain and, a little more tenderly, arrays her body and places her own talisman half on her chest.
Glas
I hate this shit.
11)
Wee Ming looks at the floor, then back at Yim Lau Wong.
Wee Ming
Why are you doing this?
Yim Lau Wong laughs.
Yim Lau Wong
I could tell you the answer, Wee Ming.
(smiles)
But what fun would that be?
wee Ming
Do not underestimate these mortals father. Their free will affords them great power.
Yim Lau Wong smiles.
Yim Lau Wong
Yes, daughter, it does.
(beat)
I am counting on that.
He steps toward the shadows.
Yim Lau Wong
You must excuse me now. I have work to do.
He glances back her way.
Yim Lau Wong
Your stepfather wants a word with you. Do enjoy your time together, won’t you?
He laughs as he steps back into the shadows and is gone.
A black, oily bubble rises from the floor, then begins to deform before it stretches and bursts and reveals the Demon Lam.
Lam
Hello, stepdaughter.
The Black and White Reapers step from the shadows to flank him.
2)
Glas
If you’re too much of a coward to do it, just say so.
Rain is over by the mirror, examining it, engrossed, and not noticing the fight about to erupt.
Deke’s hands creep toward his guns, then he lets them go again and steps up into Glas’ face.
Deke
(with a quiet, cold smile)
Ya didn’t even have the balls t’ tell Hana ya had th’ hots for her when she was alive.
(beat)
So who’s the real coward, buddy boy?
All it’ll take is a twitch...
Rain reaches out and touches the mirror’s surface. The surface sparks against her finger with a bang and a whiff of ozone and she pulls back fast.
The sound damn near startles Glas and Deke into shooting, but instead, they turn to see what’s happening.
A human form begins to coalesce in the mirror – a dark silhouette far amid the distant swirls.
Everybody steps back.
Rain
Hey guys, I think we got someone’s attention.
A black shadowy form steps out of the mirror, casting a brilliant white shadow behind him.
The shadow then disengages and stands upright as well.
It’s the Black and White Reapers, on their own turf. They look over the three interlopers, heads moving in unison. Appraising them.
4)
Glas
Well, that worked out great, don’t you think?
Rain looks back at him.
Deke
Pretty bloody typical for this place, if you ask me.
Glas sighs and starts to walk away from the other two in exasperation, but then he notices something at his feet - a familiar form – the silhouette of a paper doll.
He kneels down to touch it.
The last piece in place, Glas stands and pulls out the paper Wee Ming doll.
Glas
(suddenly)
I think I know who can help us.
He places the doll into the ruby flame, and it flares to life.
The flame, reflected in the mirror, seems to swell until it fills the glass. Wee Ming steps out of the churning flame.
Deke
Oh, bloody hell, didn’t that dodgy little flake cause enough trouble the first time?
Wee Ming turns to face Glas and nods in greeting.
Wee Ming
I know why you have called me, Royce Glas, but I cannot help you.
Glas
Why doesn’t that surprise me?
Wee Ming
Hana’s fate is subject to a deeper influence than you know. You place yourself in great danger by trying to help her.
(beat)
You should go.
6)
Rain
(to Wee Ming)
There has to be something…
Wee Ming looks back at her, and shakes her head slowly.
She looks away, then back at the others, then at the floor.
Rain sits down, shoulders slumped over. Her head drops.
Wee ming
The journey would endanger your souls. It is not worth this.
Rain continues to look at the floor, despondent.
Rain
(quietly)
It is to me.
Glas and Deke stand nearby, looking alternately at her and at their feet.
A beat.
Deke
(quietly)
Ah, hell.
Rain looks up at him.
Glas glances his way.
Glas
What?
Deke
I’ll go.
(beat)
Hell. We made it out once. What’s to say we can’t do it again.
Glas looks at Deke then to Rain. Finally, he turns to Wee Ming.
Glas
All right, Take us in.
Wee Ming looks at the floor as she considers. Then looks up, acceding to their will.
8)
Wee Ming
Glas should stay.
Glas
No way. I promised Hana I’d take care of Rain.
(glances at Deke)
I’m not gonna let her run around in hell with that psycho.
Deke
(coldly)
Who you callin’ psycho, mate?
Rain steps between them and faces Glas.
rain
Please Glas, I’d feel better knowing you were protecting us.
Glas grits his teeth. He knows there’s no choice.
Glas
Dammit.
Deke glances at Glas.
Deke
Looks like nobody gets what he wants ‘roun’ here, huh mate.
Rain turns to Wee Ming.
Rain
(to Wee Ming)
What do we do now?
Wee Ming
You must break your talisman.
Rain looks at hers in trepidation. She swallows.
She looks at Glas.
She holds it in front of her and snaps it in half.
A wave of red lightning-like energy courses over her body and she convulses, eyes wide in surprise. Then it dissipates, and as it does, one of the broken halves of the talisman disappears with it.
10)
fade out.
fade in to:
int. city of the dead, JUDgment hall
Wee Ming materializes alone.
She looks around for Rain and Deke, but they’re nowhere to be seen.
Wee Ming
Rain? Deke?
The Chair of Judgment sits before her, not far away, and she sees it now.
Wee Ming
…oh, no.
Her confusion turns to anger when YIM LAU WONG appears from the shadows.
Yim Lau Wong
Hello, my daughter.
Wee Ming wheels to face him.
Wee Ming
What have you done with them?
Yim Lau Wong brushes the question aside with a casual gesture.
Yim Lau Wong
Your friends will have to fend for themselves a bit, I’m afraid.
Wee Ming steps toward him.
Wee Ming
You fear me father? Is that why you have interfered?
Yim Lau Wong
Fear you? You have done exactly as I anticipated, my beloved daughter. You brought them to me.
12)
She looks up into his face.
Fadeout.
Fadeup.

Nearby, Deke appears inside the CASINO and is shocked to find his shoes missing.
Deke
Who the hell took me bloody shoes?!
He looks around at all of the stuff and a grin creeps across his face.

Deke steps up to the counter and notes the suspiciously familiar-looking pair behind it.
Deke
You guys again? Whadda they got you workin’ both shifts?
The Black Reaper man looks Deke over as Deke leans against the counter.
Black reaper
I notice you are…
White reaper
…unarmed.
Deke reaches instinctively for where his holsters should be. And, of course, they’re not there. He looks back up at them.
Deke
Yeah. Think ya can take care a that for me?
The White Reaper reaches beneath the counter and produces a pair of elaborately folded paper shot pistols. He places them on the counter and Deke eyes them dubiously.
Deke
Origami. Nice to see you fruitcakes got yerselves a hobby. You weave baskets too?
The White Reaper produces a flame between his fingers and ignites the pistols, which flare up and are replaced by a pair of real shot pistols.
Deke reaches for them.
Deke
That’s what I’m talkin’ about.
The Black Reaper slides them away from his approaching hand.

Deke leans over the counter conspiratorially.
Deke

Black and White reaper
Trust.
Deke starts to reach for his pockets.
Deke
Trust, huh? I can get me a wad a that at the casino.
Black reaper
Money…
White reaper
…is not the answer.
Deke stops for a second.
Deke
What?! Y’ gotta be jokin’ mate! What else ‘m I gonna give ya? Pocket lint?
He produces the talisman half.
Deke
This piece a junk?
They perk up visibly.
Black reaper
That would suffice…
White reaper
…for now.
Deke
What, the lint?
3)
They continue to look at him impassively. He fingers the talisman.
Deke
I dunno. They told me this is my ticket back outta here.
Black reaper
Ah but think of the glorious havoc…
White reaper
…you could wreak with these by your side.
White reaper
But if you are unsure…
The Black Reaper takes the guns and begins to place them behind the counter.
Black reaper
…of your ability to repay…
This gets Deke’s hackles up.
Deke
Hey now! There ain’t a casino built that don’t pay out under ol’ Deke’s hands.
They watch him, impassively.
Deke
(considering)
…so… what’d it cost to buy this baby back?
The Black Reaper places the guns back on the counter.
Black reaper
A minor…
White reaper
…trifle.
4)
Deke
Listen mate, I ain’t stupid. I ain’t givin’ up nothin’ without a set price attached.
Black reaper
We understand…
White reaper
…if trust is an issue.
They turn away from him, in unison, about to return to whatever tasks they were doing before.
A beat.
Deke
…all right.
He places the talisman on the counter, but keeps his hand on it.
deke
…I’ll be able to buy it back whenever I want right?
Black reaper
Of course…
White reaper
If you desire.
He slides the talisman across the counter.
The White Reaper hands the pistols to Deke as the Black Reaper lifts the Talisman from the counter and inserts it into an inventory bubble behind him.

The White Reaper turns and reaches toward the talisman in the bubble.
White reaper
You may have the talisman…
But instead of the talisman, he produces a deck of cards from a bubble beside it.
Black reaper
…But wouldn’t you rather have this lucky deck instead?
Deke’s hands move toward his pistols. He doesn’t like cheats that aren’t him.
Deke

int. brothel vip room - night
Upon entering the VIP whore room, Deke sees an especially beautiful whore. Her face is obscured by her hanging hair, and she’s facing away.
He approaches from behind.
Deke
Don’t be shy, doll. I’ll go easy…
He gets his arms around her, still from behind.
Deke
(into her ear)
...fer starters.
She raises her head. It’s Hana!
Deke pushes away in shock.
Deke
Bloody hell! Hana?
His initial shock now gives way to relief and elation – he’s found her!
Deke
No worries, love! We’re gonna get you outta here!
He starts to pull her up.
She isn’t moving.
Deke
Come on, doll. I’m here ta save ya!
Suddenly, her head snaps to face him. She’s on her feet in an instant and stalking toward him.
Hana
(almost hissing at him)
Save me? You put me here.
3)
Hana digs her fingers into his cheeks and turns his head back roughly to face her.
Hana
Look at me! Look at what you’ve done, you bastard! I’m a stinking whore rotting in Hell and you did this to me!
Deke gets his own hands onto her neck, trying to get her off him. She’s clawing at his face, drawing blood.
Deke
Stop!
She doesn’t. She’s an animal, savagely attacking him.
Hana
(choking it out)
You did this to me!
Deke keeps the pressure on, just trying to get her off, hands on her throat, shaking her like a dog killing an animal.
Hana
(barely audible)
…you…did…this…
Another shake. Deke’s eyes have gone dead. No soul left – just a killer doing what he does.
She’s gone silent. Still. Lifeless. He holds her.
A familiar laugh creeps into the room.
Realization slowly dawns on Deke, and he lets the body to the floor, kneeling down beside it.
Unbeknownst to Deke, a few thin tendrils extend from Hana’s body to a looming figure appearing from the shadows behind him. They dissipate suddenly as the figure comes into view – It’s Madam Chen.
Chen
(like a lover)
Does it feel better now, Deke? All the guilt, all the pain, is it gone?
2)
Deke steps back, taken aback.
Deke
I…
Hana
(taking another aggressive step with each beat)
You caused this, Deke. You can’t fix it. You could never fix anything. You’re useless.
Deke grabs her arm and starts trying to pull her toward the door. She’s surprisingly strong, and not going.
Deke
(starting to get angry)
We gotta go.
Hana starts circling him, almost stalking him.
Hana
Go where? Hmmm? You’re not going anywhere.
She’s behind him now, speaking into his ear.
Hana
You gave away your soul.
(beat)
Now we’re both damned.
She places a hand against his face.
Hana
I trusted you once.
She pushes off his face.
Hana
Never again.
Deke turns away.
Deke
(trying to control himself)
Stop!
4)
Deke doesn’t look up at her. He knows who this is. He remains focused on Hana and what he’s done. Again.
Deke
(quietly)
No.
(breaking down)
I’m so sorry, Hana...
Madam Chen reaches around him. Bladed talon against his throat. She could kill him in an instant now, and he doesn’t care.
She presses the blade into his exposed throat. No response from him.
Chen
I can end your suffering.
A beat.
Abruptly, she retracts her talon.
Deke looks wildly up at her, his face desperate.
Chen
Go to the ferryman. Across the river waits the Judgment Hall, and your absolution.
Madam Chen vanishes.
Deke remains beside Hana’s body another moment. A single, choked sob racks his body and he clambers to his feet and scrambles to the door and out.

Deke takes it and holds it in his hand. He looks at it, his own reflection just barely visible in its polished surface.
Deke realizes he has no clue what to do next.
Deke
(slightly embarrassed)
Okay… how’s it work?
White reaper
You simply have to…
Black reaper

A beat. Deke looks at it. Nothing happens. He’s still there. Another beat.
Deke
So why’m I still here?
Black reaper
Your own soul knows…
White reaper
…where it belongs.
Deke isn’t sure what to make of this.
Deke
So what’re you sayin? I wanna stay in hell?
2)
He considers the talisman again, then looks back up at them.
Deke
I ain’t stayin’ here.

Black reaper

The White Reaper places the Paper Mallet on the counter.
White reaper
With this, the ferryman will hear your call.
Black reaper
But passage comes with a price.
Deke considers the mallet. He gets what’s going on.
Deke
(indicates the mallet)
You’ll gimme that…
(holds up his own talisman)

White reaper
You do understand that…
He continues to consider the talisman.
Deke
I’d be givin’ up me soul, right? For good?

The Reapers nod once, slowly.
